Microchip and Micron Showcase PCIe Gen 6 Storage Architecture
TMTPOST — Microchip Technology and Micron Technology on Tuesday demonstrated an end-to-end PCIe Gen 6 storage architecture at the 2026 Future of Memory and Storage conference. The live setup pairs Microchip’s Switchtec PCIe Gen 6 fan-out switches with Micron’s 9650 NVMe solid-state drives, allowing the drives to run at full Gen 6 line rates between host processors and multiple SSDs. The combination is designed to deliver higher sustained throughput, lower latency and more scalable connectivity for artificial-intelligence training and inference, high-performance computing and cloud data-center workloads. PCIe 6.0 doubles per-lane bandwidth to 64 giga-transfers per second relative to the previous generation, addressing the data-movement bottleneck that arises when accelerators outpace storage subsystems. Micron’s 9650 is the first mass-produced PCIe Gen 6 enterprise SSD, while Microchip’s Switchtec Gen 6 family, fabricated on a 3-nanometer process, supports high lane counts, advanced error isolation, diagnostics and multicast capabilities that enable one-to-many data distribution within a PCIe domain. The joint demonstration underscores interoperability between the two suppliers’ production silicon and gives system builders a concrete reference for deploying next-generation storage fabrics that keep pace with rising AI and HPC traffic.
