SoftBank Cancels AI Chip Partnership With Intel
TMTPOST--Japanese tech investor SoftBank has abandoned its plans to develop an artificial intelligence chip with Intel, aiming to rival Nvidia, according to a report by the Financial Times on Thursday.
The collaboration fell through as Intel struggled to meet SoftBank's specifications, sources familiar with the situation told the Financial Times. SoftBank has attributed the breakdown of negotiations to Intel's inability to fulfill requirements for both production volume and speed.
The report also noted that SoftBank is now shifting its focus to discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker.
This development comes ahead of Intel's significant cost-cutting measures, which included thousands of layoffs announced in early August.
