Google Faces Potential Breakup as U.S. Government Considers Antitrust Actions
Asianfin--The U.S. government is reportedly exploring the possibility of breaking up Google's search business as part of an ongoing antitrust case. According to Reuters, the U.S. may ask a judge to order Alphabet’s Google to divest key components of its operations, such as the Android operating system and Chrome browser, which are seen as contributing to Google's alleged monopoly in internet search. The case, which began in August, claims Google holds a dominant 90% share of internet searches in the U.S., maintaining an illegal monopoly. The Justice Department has proposed remedies to reduce Google’s control and create opportunities for competitors, potentially reshaping the search landscape in America. "Addressing these harms requires not only ending Google's dominance in distribution today but also ensuring it does not control distribution in the future," the Justice Department stated.
