Indonesia Moves to Ban Temu, Requests App Store Removal
Asianfin--Indonesia is taking steps to block access to the cross-border e-commerce platform Temu, owned by Pinduoduo. Indonesia's Communications Minister, Budi Arie Setiadi, announced on Friday that senior government officials have requested Google and Apple to remove Temu from their app stores, preventing it from being downloaded in the country.
This move is reportedly a preemptive effort by the government to protect local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the impact of Temu's low-cost products. Although no transactions involving local users have been detected on the platform, officials are concerned about potential threats to local businesses.
Budi also revealed that the government plans to propose similar actions against Shein, another fast-fashion e-commerce platform from China. As of now, Temu, Shein, Apple, and Google have not issued any comments on the matter. Currently, Temu remains available for download in Indonesian app stores.
