China Accuses Foreign Company of Illegally Collecting Geographic Data
Asianfin -- China’s Ministry of State Security has accused an overseas firm, along with a local company, of illegally gathering geographic information under the pretense of conducting research for smart driving technology. However, the identities of the companies involved were not disclosed. In China, activities related to map-making and geographic data collection are strictly regulated, with fewer than 30 firms authorized to gather geographic information for navigation purposes. The Ministry stated that the foreign entity, lacking permission to collect such data, hired a local qualified map maker and procured several vehicles equipped with sensors to minimize the risk of detection. The local company was also instructed to transfer the collected data out of China. Following an investigation, it was determined that much of the data obtained by the overseas firm included state secrets. Furthermore, the local company failed to adhere to industry standards, resulting in a data leak. Those involved, including the firms and individuals, have been held accountable under the law, according to the Ministry’s statement released on Wednesday. These allegations arise amid ongoing tensions between China and countries such as the U.S. and Canada over restrictions on sensor-equipped Chinese electric vehicles. The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed a ban on the sale or import of smart cars utilizing Chinese or Russian technology due to national security concerns, while Canada is considering a similar action. Beijing has criticized these bans as violations of market economy principles and fair competition.
