Ericsson Enters 5G ORAN Partnership with Spain's MasOrange
Asianfin -- Ericsson announced on Tuesday that it has signed a 5G agreement with MasOrange, Spain's largest telecommunications operator, to enhance its network utilizing Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) technologies. This marks Ericsson's first such deal in Europe following its contract with AT&T in the United States last year.
In 2022, Ericsson secured a $14 billion, five-year Open Radio Access Network agreement with AT&T, a technology designed to significantly reduce costs by employing cloud-based software and equipment from multiple suppliers rather than relying on a single source.
The AT&T agreement positively impacted Ericsson's earnings, as North America began to show signs of growth after a prolonged period of stagnation.
"This deal with MasOrange reflects the direction we believe the industry is headed and how we will expand Open RAN," said Jenny Lindqvist, senior vice president at Ericsson, in an interview with Reuters.
