35 Dead After SUV Plows into Crowds at Sports Center in Southern China, Police Report
Asianfin -- Thirty-five people were killed when an SUV drove into crowds exercising at an outdoor sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday evening, police confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. at Zhuhai Sports Center, where the vehicle struck citizens engaged in evening fitness routines, injuring over 40 people, all of whom were hospitalized, according to a police statement released Tuesday.
The driver, a 62-year-old man, attempted to flee but was “restrained” by police at the scene, the statement said. The tragedy unfolded on the eve of China’s major airshow, scheduled to run in Zhuhai from November 12 to 17.
Reports from Caixin, a Chinese media outlet, indicate the SUV hit multiple walking groups, injuring many participants. Victims included middle-aged and elderly individuals as well as teenagers and children, Caixin noted.
“The vehicle struck people all around the circular track, injuring individuals in different sections across the eastern, southern, western, and northern areas,” a witness named Liu told Caixin.
The Zhuhai Sports Center, a popular location with an outdoor track, is frequently used by residents for daily exercise. Following the incident, the center announced a temporary closure.
Videos of the aftermath, verified and geolocated by CNN, depict numerous people lying injured on the jogging tracks, surrounded by scattered shoes. Many victims were in sports attire, including uniforms from at least two local fitness groups.
