Chinese Companies Going Overseas Can Take the "Grassroots Route" in the U.S. in the Trump 2.0 Era, Says Expert
TMTPOST -- He Weiwen, senior fellow, Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University, and former Economic and Commercial Counselor at Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco and New York, expressed a generally cautious and pessimistic view on China-U.S. trade relations in the "Trump 2.0" era. However, He emphasized that this does not mean Chinese companies should remain passive in their international expansion efforts. He made the remarks on Friday at the 2024 T-EDGE Conference and TMTPost Annual Economic Meeting. He suggested that Chinese businesses could explore what he called the "grassroots route" when entering the U.S. market. Rather than targeting major metropolitan areas or operating within the larger, challenging macroeconomic environment, He recommended focusing on smaller-scale markets, such as states, counties, and cities. By doing so, companies can create a favorable micro-environment that aligns with local economic and social needs. This approach would allow Chinese companies to contribute to local job creation and meet community needs, thereby gaining support from local governments. This strategy could not only help businesses establish a foothold but also ensure they are able to stay and thrive in the U.S. market.
