Netanyahu Confirms Gaza Ceasefire Agreement Set to Begin Sunday
TMTPOST -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that an agreement with Hamas to temporarily pause the conflict in Gaza has been finalized and is scheduled to commence on Sunday.
Netanyahu stated that he instructed Israel’s security cabinet to convene at 10:15 a.m. local time to approve the ceasefire, which has received support from U.S. President Joe Biden and incoming leader Donald Trump.
The agreement faced potential setbacks on Thursday, as Netanyahu accused Hamas of failing to uphold certain commitments. He emphasized that his cabinet would only meet to ratify the deal once the group, labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. and others, agreed to all terms.
Initially revealed by Biden, Trump, and Qatar on Wednesday, the ceasefire includes Hamas releasing 33 of the approximately 98 hostages it holds in Gaza during the first six-week phase. In return, Israel will withdraw troops from populated areas in Gaza and release around 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.
