China’s CATL Restarts Lithium Mine and Refinery in Jiangxi
TMTPOST -- Chinese battery giant CATL has resumed operations at its lithium lepidolite mine and refinery in Jiangxi province, a spokesperson for its joint venture partner Lopal Tech confirmed on Tuesday.
The restart comes as CATL successfully reduced production costs at both facilities. "Currently, the operation is producing over 2,000 tons of lithium carbonate per month, with plans to ramp up output beyond 3,000 tons," the spokesperson said.
Reuters previously reported the mine’s reopening on Friday, citing a UBS report. CATL has not responded to requests for comment.
The Jiangxi mine has been a key source of China’s fast-growing lithium supply, reinforcing the country’s position as the world’s leading processor of the battery material. News of its temporary closure in September had triggered a surge in lithium stock prices.
On Tuesday, shares of Australian lithium miners tumbled following reports of the mine’s resumption.
