Elon Musk Says Tesla Trained Self-Driving Tech in China Using Internet Videos
TMTPOST -- Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, shared on Tuesday that the company trained its self-driving technology in China using publicly available internet videos. Responding to a question about how Tesla could roll out its self-driving software in China without local testing, Musk explained on X, “We just used publicly available video on the Internet of roads and signs in China and used that to train in sim.” Tesla launched self-driving features for some of its cars in China on Tuesday, according to a software update log reviewed by Business Insider. However, this update doesn’t include the full suite of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, focusing instead on driver-assist features like turn guidance and lane-changing assistance. Tesla clarified that the rollout of certain features might vary based on the vehicle's model and configuration, and that more self-driving features will be gradually introduced to additional vehicles. Tesla representatives did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. This move comes shortly after Chinese automaker BYD announced that all of its customers would receive self-driving software at no extra cost. In contrast, Tesla owners in China must pay around $8,800 to access their vehicle's self-driving capabilities.
