OpenAI Unveils o1-pro, Its Most Expensive AI Model to Date
TMTPOST -- OpenAI has introduced a more advanced iteration of its "reasoning" AI model, o1-pro, through its developer API.
The new model, designed to deliver superior performance, leverages significantly more computational resources than its predecessor, o1, to provide "consistently better responses."
Currently, o1-pro is accessible only to a select group of developers—those who have spent at least $5 on OpenAI API services—and comes with a hefty price tag. OpenAI is charging $150 per million tokens (approximately 750,000 words) input into the model and $600 per million tokens generated by it. This makes o1-pro twice as expensive as OpenAI's GPT-4.5 for input and ten times the cost of the standard o1 model.
The company is banking on o1-pro's enhanced capabilities to justify its premium pricing.
"O1-pro in the API is a version of o1 that uses more computing power to think harder and deliver even better answers to the most challenging problems," an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch. "After receiving numerous requests from our developer community, we’re thrilled to make it available in the API to offer even more reliable responses."
The launch of o1-pro underscores OpenAI's commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI performance, catering to developers seeking cutting-edge solutions for complex tasks.
