Malaysia's U Mobile Taps Huawei, ZTE for Second 5G Network Rollout
TMTPOST -- Malaysian telecom operator U Mobile announced Tuesday it will partner with China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corporation to build the country’s second 5G network, marking a significant step in the government’s dual-network strategy. The move comes after Malaysia’s decision in May 2023 to shift from a single wholesale 5G network to a dual network model, aiming to increase competition and reduce reliance on any single provider. The policy also paves the way for broader participation by international tech firms. In September 2023, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted that the new approach would foster a balanced mix of Western and Eastern technologies in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure, including greater involvement from Huawei, despite lingering security concerns from some Western nations. U Mobile, which secured the government contract for the second 5G network rollout last month, said it selected Huawei and ZTE due to their strong global track records in deploying 5G infrastructure. Chairman Vincent Tan said Huawei will take charge of building the network in Peninsular Malaysia, while ZTE will lead efforts in East Malaysia. The company did not disclose the value of the deal.
