Trump Targets Foreign Films with Proposed 100% Tariff
TMTPOST -- U.S. President Donald Trump has set his sights on Hollywood's global competitors, proposing a 100% tariff on all foreign-made films imported into the United States. In a post on his Truth Social platform Sunday evening, Trump said he directed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to initiate the process. He claimed the American movie industry is "dying a very fast death" and blamed foreign countries for luring filmmakers away with generous incentives. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!” Trump wrote, echoing his longstanding protectionist stance. The feasibility of the proposal remains unclear. Films are classified as intellectual property and fall under services, not goods, meaning they are typically outside the scope of traditional tariffs. Still, the USTR has previously acknowledged that some service sectors can face non-tariff trade barriers, such as regulatory hurdles or tax breaks that may disadvantage domestic industries.
