U.S. State Department Reverses Course on Harvard Student Visas After Court Block
TMTPOST -- The U.S. State Department on Friday evening directed consulates worldwide to resume processing visa applications for students planning to attend Harvard University, reversing a directive issued just a day earlier that had called for such requests to be denied. The new guidance, sent at 7:55 p.m. Friday, stated that “consular sections must resume processing of Harvard University student and exchange visitor visas.” The reversal came less than an hour after a federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to restrict international students from entering the U.S. to study at Harvard. On Thursday, an earlier cable had instructed consular officers to maintain appointments for affected applicants and assess their overall eligibility for entry into the U.S. However, it also explicitly said that applicants seeking to “begin a course of study at Harvard University or participate in an exchange visitor program at Harvard University” should be rejected.
