EU Races to Finalize Framework Trade Deal With U.S. Ahead of Tariff Deadline
TMTPOST -- The European Union is pushing to finalize a framework trade agreement with the United States this week in a bid to secure a 10% tariff cap before an August 1 deadline, as both sides continue talks toward a longer-term deal.
According to people familiar with the discussions, the EU is seeking exemptions for key sectors—including aircraft, aircraft parts, wine, and spirits—from the baseline 10% tariff. An agreement in principle is expected to offer some relief for these industries.
The euro rose as much as 0.3% in early Asian trading on Tuesday after Politico reported that the US had proposed a deal maintaining the 10% tariff level while carving out exemptions for sensitive sectors. Investors viewed the 10% threshold as a more manageable trade duty, helping lift sentiment around the euro.
