Trump Says Furniture Tariffs to Be Imposed Within 50 Days
TMTPOST -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday his administration will impose new tariffs on imported furniture within the next 50 days, vowing to revive U.S. manufacturing in the sector. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the investigation into furniture imports will be completed by October, after which tariffs “at a rate yet to be determined” will take effect. “This will bring the Furniture Business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and States all across the Union,” he wrote. The announcement comes as the administration weighs higher tariffs on a range of imported goods including copper, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. Furniture prices in the U.S. have already been rising as tariffs on imports from China and Vietnam — the top two suppliers, shipping $12 billion worth of furniture last year — were increased earlier this year. Furniture and bedding prices, tracked by the Consumer Price Index, climbed 0.4% in June and 0.9% in July, reversing more than two years of deflationary trends.
