Amazon, Google, Microsoft Urge H-1B Staff to Avoid Travel Amid Trump Visa Fee Rule
TMTPOST -- Major U.S. tech firms are cautioning employees on H-1B visas to remain in the country following President Donald Trump’s new proclamation imposing a $100,000 fee on H-1B applications, according to multiple reports. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft reportedly told affected staff via email to avoid international travel — and for those already abroad, to return before the rule takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Sunday. Business Insider published memos from Amazon and Microsoft, while a similar directive from Google was reported separately. Microsoft declined to comment; Amazon and Google have yet to respond. Government data shows Amazon has secured the most H-1B visas so far this fiscal year, followed by Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple, with Google ranked sixth. A White House official told Axios the new fee applies only to fresh applications, not renewals or existing visas. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added on X that H-1B holders’ travel rights remain unchanged by the proclamation.
