China’s Turing Award Winner Andrew Yao Says Quantum Tech Applications Will Emerge Within a Decade
TMTPOST -- Industrial applications of quantum technology are expected to take shape within five to 10 years, without waiting for the advent of universal quantum computers, according to Andrew Yao, China’s only Turing Award recipient. China’s quantum sector remains at an early stage, with a focus on scientific instruments and basic research, Yao said at the Pujiang Innovation Forum. But the scope goes beyond computing, as emerging applications such as quantum navigation and quantum radar are beginning to demonstrate potential, he noted. Yao, 78, was born in Shanghai and moved to the United States at 21. He won the Turing Award in 2000 for his contributions to computational theory before returning to China in 2004 to join Tsinghua University. He is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
