Mass Cheating Scandal at South Korea’s Yonsei University Involves AI Tools Like ChatGPT
Yonsei University, one of South Korea’s top three universities alongside Seoul National University and Korea University, is facing a major cheating scandal. Hundreds of students in an elective course are suspected of using AI tools, including ChatGPT, to complete their midterm exams. A professor teaching the Natural Language Processing (NLP) and ChatGPT course at Yonsei’s Sinchon campus said that, due to approximately 600 students enrolled, the course was delivered online. The midterm exam was conducted via an online platform on October 15. To prevent cheating, students were required to record their screens throughout the exam and submit videos showing both their hands and faces. Despite these measures, some students circumvented monitoring by adjusting camera angles or opening multiple windows on their screens simultaneously. Upon detecting signs of cheating, the professor issued a notice stating that students who voluntarily confessed would receive a zero on the midterm but face no further penalties. The exact number of students involved remains unclear, though estimates suggest it may exceed half of the class. Following the professor’s announcement, a poll appeared on Yonsei’s board in a university social app labeled “Let’s Vote Honestly,” in which 190 out of 353 participants admitted to cheating. Reports indicate that AI tools were widely used during the exam. One student said, “Most of us used ChatGPT during the exam.” Another student who took the course last semester added, “Many classmates, including myself, used AI to find answers.”
