Guinea Slated to Announce Bauxite Export Curbs Next Month
TMTPOST — Guinea, the world’s premier bauxite-producing nation, is finalized to unveil regulatory export control reforms next month in an absolute bid to stabilize collapsing global market prices. The West African country commands more than one-third of total global bauxite output, making it the bedrock supplier for global aluminum refining chains—particularly within China, which absorbs over 70% of Guinea’s shipments. However, unconstrained supply scaling severely destabilized global inventory balances. Guinea's bauxite export volumes spiked 25% year-on-year to 183 million metric tons throughout 2025, and shipping velocities accelerated even further during the first quarter of 2026. Bouna Sylla, Guinea's Minister of Mines and Geology, stated that this aggressive overproduction triggered a massive market glut, pushing spot prices down to nearly half of their early 2025 peaks. "Supply must not exceed demand," Sylla remarked regarding the upcoming June policy finalization. "We want to regulate export quantities to allow prices to rebound back to a reasonable level."
