China Eyes All-solid-state Batteries in Long Term Depending on Supply Chain Cost
TMTPOST -- Qu Guochun, director of the Equipment Industry Development Center, said the power battery industry is moving toward a diversified technology landscape, with different technology routes being adapted to different market segments, while next-generation batteries are accelerating toward commercialization. He made remarks at the 2026 World Power Battery Conference on Thursday. The Power Battery Industry Development Index (2026) was released by the Equipment Industry Development Center under China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) during the conference.  In the short term, liquid lithium-ion batteries will remain the dominant product, with their performance continuing to improve through successive iterations. In the medium term, the three-route development pattern of “liquid lithium-ion batteries + sodium-ion batteries + semi-solid-state batteries” will continue to evolve. Sodium-ion batteries are expected to replace some lower-end lithium battery applications, while once semi-solid-state batteries achieve full-scale commercialization, they will become an upgrade option for mid- to high-end vehicle models. In the long term, the widespread adoption of all-solid-state batteries will depend on cost control across the industry supply chain. As manufacturing processes continue to mature and material and production costs decline significantly, all-solid-state batteries will acquire the necessary conditions to penetrate the mid-range vehicle market.
