BEIJING, January 20 (TMTPOST) — Redmagic, a gaming smartphone brand owned by Chinese telecom company ZTE Corporation (HKG: 0763), has established a dedicated team in Q3 2021 to tap into the metaverse world, Yu Hang, Senior Vice President of ZTE’s smartphone brand Nubia said.

The company has built a product and technology team that will be responsible for developing metaverse-related products and hardware, Yu said. The team will be developing products for ZTE’s smartphone brand Redmagic.

ZTE Corporation has three smartphone brands – ZTE, Nubia and Redmagic. Redmagic is a gaming smartphone brand that targets consumers who engage in heavy gaming or e-sports on smartphone.

In 2022, Redmagic will continue to launch new smartphone products and gaming equipment such as displays for e-sports, professional gaming mouses and keyboards and VR devices, according to Yu.

“In late 2021, we established a small team internally. And we have started to work on VR hardware and software development,” Yu said, stating that Redmagic already has some technological progress in hardware and software for the metaverse. “Even though we believe that there still needs to be more consumer education on VR technology in the market, it is still important for Redmagic to invest in this field for our gaming business. So we are quite ahead of the industry in terms of investing in VR but we will nonetheless continue to pay attention to this sector.”

“For example, we have explored technologies such as engine algorithm, motion capture and image recognition, etc. And we are hoping to bring these technologies to not only professional hardware, but also conventional smartphones. We want smartphones to be able to achieve complex computing,” Yu said, explaining that Redmagic will also develop more gaming devices and work with third parties on making content.

“What we are doing right now is that we want to make our virtual avatars move and act better and more naturally. We want to make VR products that can serve as portals to Redmagic’s metaverse and bring quality service to our customers.”
