BEIJING, March 21 (TMTPOST) — Multinational tech giant Apple’s main supplier Foxconn resumed the operation of its plants in Shenzhen on Monday, saying that its plants in the city “have basically resumed their normal operation.”

The OEM company announced on Monday that its plants in Longhua and Guanlan in Shenzhen city that had complied with local pandemic control and prevention policies have resumed its business operation and production.

However, employees that reside in the Futian district, which is still considered an area of high risk of exposure to Covid-19, will continue to work from home, Reuters reported, citing an internal document from Foxconn.

Foxconn announced on March 14 that it will halt operation in Shenzhen due to the Covid-19 resurgence in the city and pandemic control and prevention measures.

Foxconn mainly uses its plant in Zhengzhou, Henan province, to manufacture iPhones for Apple, according to Chinese tech media IT’s Home. Only a small proportion of iPhones are manufactured at Foxconn’s plants in Shenzhen, IT’s Home reported, quoting a source familiar with the matter.

Covid-19 has been resurging in China as the more contagious Omicron variant made its way into the country. 4,758 new cases have been reported on Monday in China, with 1,947 cases being domestic transmissions. Although such numbers might look small in other countries, it is another story in China as the country continues to hold on to its dynamic zero-covid policy.

China has been sticking to its dynamic zero-covid policy, a pandemic control and prevention policy that aims to reduce Covid-19 cases to zero in the country. Under this policy, a series of strict pandemic control measures will be taken to curb the spread of Covid-19 once cases are reported. Local authorities will impose measures such as lockdown, quarantine, mass testing and travel restrictions to combat Covid-19. In Shenzhen, many people would even carry blankets and suitcases to work because they might be undergoing lockdown in their office if risk is detected.
