BEIJING, September 9 (TMTPOST) – In August, the wholesale penetration rate for new energy vehicle manufacturers exceeded 30% for the first time, reaching 30.1%, an increase of 9.7 percentage points from last year. While the retail penetration rate reached 28.3% in the same period, an increase of 11 percentage points year-on-year, according to the data disclosed by China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Thursday.

In March 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the 14th Five-Year Modern Energy System Plan, proposing that by 2025, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles, will reach about 20%. An automotive industry source analyzed the performance of passenger car sales, which account for more than 80% of overall vehicle sales, as an important reference. According to the current single-month penetration level, the annual penetration rate of new energy vehicles will exceed 25% in 2022. This means that the official target may be completed ahead of schedule in 2022.

The data from the CPCA show that the annual wholesale penetration rate of new energy vehicles in 2021 was 15.7%, an increase of nearly 10 percentage points from 2020.

The market generally believes that the significant increase in penetration rate is an important signal for the industry to accelerate development. A research report from China’s leading securities and investment management firm Sinolink Securities points out that the market penetration rate of 20% is a very important node, meaning that the early education and popularization of the market are completed at this time, while the supply chain tends to stabilize.

In August, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 632,000 units, up 103.9% year-on-year. Retail sales reached 529,000 units, up 111.2% year on year.

There were 16 new energy vehicle manufacturers whose wholesale sales exceeded 10,000 units in the same period, an increase of 10 companies year-on-year.
